Fly Me To The Moon

Moon & Star Flyer ride at Edinburgh’s Christmas - ED526

I have a wee obsession with creating big sun and moon images, and in 2023 the “Beaver Moon” came to town at just the right position to use as a background. The Star Flyer ride rotates around a central spine and climbs to 240ft above the Christmas Market where it spins around a few times before descending.

I tried to position myself where the seats would be passing in front of the moon at the top of the climb but had to keep moving, as the moon rose into the sky. It took quite a few attempts over about an hour and there was only a little time to review shots between the rides refilling with fresh victims. I wanted to get the images as sharp as possible but also wanted to see some detail on the moon’s surface so I had to compromise by shooting at a noisy 4000 ISO at f/11 which gave me a shutter speed of 1/250 sec.

The Guardian newspaper published this photo on 1st December 2023.

Nikon D850 and a 200-500mm lens.
