Blue Start
St Abb’s Head Lighthouse - AB001
This lighthouse stands, crouches even, on the cliffs at St Abb’s Head in the Scottish Borders. Built in 1862 by the famous Stevenson family the lighthouse is a fantastic place to stand and look straight out to sea towards Norway.
At night, and during the twilight before sunrise it has an eerie quality which is one part thrilling and one part chilling. The sunrise colours I’d hoped for never arrived but instead the sky slowly grew brighter shades of blue. I shot many images that morning but my favourite was this one when I began trying to precisely distill the shapes in the light beacon and position its lines and patterns against the seascape behind.
Sometimes photography feels more like graphic design, and an awful lot like meditation.
